Bully Blinders likes its music crunchy

“Dirty, raw, and natural.” These are three words that lead vocalist William Talls — of San Diego’s The Kneehighs — used to describe his Normal Heights-based hip-hop group, Bully Blinders.

If you’ve had enough of overproduced, voice-altering, mainstream radio hits, then take a listen to these two down-to-earth musicians. Along with bassist Chad Tuthill, 28, the duo provides a refreshing sound in a sea of digitally altered music.

The Bully Blinders formed in May 2009 when the two were introduced by DJ GarGar of the Kneehighs, a mutual friend with whom they attended Serra High School in San Diego.

The group, which released its debut album “City of Dirt” in January, raps about everything from media influence to the members’ favorite cereals.

What is a Bully Blinder?
“It’s from the movie ‘The Goonies’ ... . We sit back and watch a lot of old ’80s movies and television shows, and it just kind of stuck. It sounded like a good name, so we rolled with it.”

Where do you draw inspiration for your lyrics?
“I write about topics that stick with me — the cereal one came from being at parties and listening to people argue about what they think is the best cereal. I write about stuff that keeps hitting me.”

If you were stuck eating one cereal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“That is a very tough question. ... I would have to say Cinnamon Toast Crunch because you can eat that any time of day. It’s good for dinner and breakfast.”

A sentence to describe the Bully Blinders’ style?
“The album title says it all: ‘City of Dirt.’ We wanted a raw and natural sound. Sometimes when music gets overproduced, it gets too clean. It gets like a hospital room, with a bunch of white walls, and it loses its natural feeling. We wanted to keep it natural, so we used a lot of live music on the album.”

Are you working on anything new?
“Yeah, we are. Right now, we’re going to put together another album, but we’ve really been trying to promote ‘City of Dirt.’ We’ve played five or six shows since we started, all locally, but we want to take it further, maybe a little outside of San Diego.” signonsandiego
